On the 17th of this month, our two Year 10 Robotics class experienced the best possible introduction to the course with a trip to The Mind Lab run by Unitec and located in Newmarket. The Mind Lab is a pioneer in digital and collaborative learning who are pushing education into the 21st Century by running sessions on things such as coding, web design, animation, and of course robotics. Add to this an eclectic and funky environment, world class facilitators, and half a day to soak it all up and you have a learning experience that is fun, productive, and engaging. Students used computer software to programme robots to do certain functions, including battling it out in the arena, solving complex problems in groups along the way. Both robotics teachers, Mr McGarva and Mr Haddon, have participated in a Post Graduate Diploma programme run by The Mind Lab in 2015 and so were keen to get the students there as soon as possible. Students and teachers alike had a fantastic time, and Aorere was perhaps best encapsulated by the company’s educational director’s quote on Twitter that evening: “awesome bunch of students”.
