It is with profound sadness that the Aorere College whānau acknowledges the passing of former Principal, Mike Williams, who led our kura from 2001 to 2009. We extend our deepest condolences to Mike's whānau. Mike joined us during a time of great need. His strong, visionary leadership and sheer hard work laid the crucial foundations for the many successes Aorere enjoys today. He united our staff with the vision of the 'Aorere Way' and worked tirelessly to turn around trends, ensuring our students thrived in any environment. Mike's determination led to significant upgrades, including the A-Block Student Services Centre opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark, and further major investments in buildings, facilities, teaching spaces and ICT infrastructure. He championed professional development and always acknowledged the professionalism and commitment of staff. Mike intrinsically believed in our students and was a constant, visible presence, supporting all staff in their commitment to extracurricular activities. He created opportunities for our students to thrive and broaden their horizons. In his 2009 farewell speech to students, Mike used the Zulu greeting 'sawubona' meaning "I see you," reflecting what he had learned at Aorere: to truly know and value each person, complete with their history, culture, and aspirations. Mike will always be a part of the Aorere whānau; his legacy remains. Tēnei te reo mōteatea e tangi tonu nei, kua hinga te tōtara o Te Waonui a Tāne. E te tōtara haemata, Mike Williams, moe mai rā. ![]() |
